On May 16, 2024, Gov. Moore signed several healthcare bills into law.
HB 1339/SB 778 requires insurers, nonprofit health service plans, and health maintenance organizations to provide coverage for hearing aids and audiological services for adults in certain situations. Currently, these plans are required to cover hearing aids for minor children. Effective January 1, 2025, these provisions will also apply to adults for whom the hearing aid is prescribed, fitted, and dispensed by a licensed audiologist. Plans may limit the benefit to $1,400 per hearing aid every 36 months; an enrollee may choose a hearing aid that exceeds the $1,400 allowance and pay the difference in price.
HB 1259 revises the definition of “supplemental breast examination” to include image-guided breast biopsy as part of the definition. It also clarifies that follow-up diagnostic imaging for lung cancer screening may not be subject to prior authorization requirements, and costs for follow-up diagnostic imaging for lung care must be in parity with those same costs levied for breast cancer screening.
SB119 revises the definition of “legally protected health care” to include certain gender-affirming treatment for the purposes of the provision or support of care that is lawful in the state.
Employers sponsoring health plans issued, delivered, or renewed in Maryland should be aware of these developments and contact their carriers for further information.
