Extension of Prior Authorization Timeframes
On September 1, 2021, the Department of Insurance issued Bulletin 261 extending certain prior authorization timeframes in light of the ongoing public health crisis due to COVID-19.
The bulletin explains that the department strongly encourages insurers to extend prior authorization timeframes of approved authorizations for 180 days from the expiration of the prior authorization of non-emergent procedures postponed to assist COVID-19 capabilities.
While the bulletin applies to insurers, employers should be aware of these developments.
