On August 20, 2021, H.B. 2653 was passed, amending the Illinois Insurance Code to require group health plans to provide coverage without cost-sharing for colonoscopies that are follow-up exams based on an initial screen where the colonoscopy was determined to be medically necessary. The new law applies to group health plans that are issued or renewed on or after January 1, 2022.
Further, the bill states that a group health plan shall not impose a deductible, coinsurance, copayment or any other cost-sharing on colonoscopy coverage, unless such coverage would disqualify a HDHP from eligibility for an HSA.
Employers should be aware of these developments and confirm with carriers (as applicable) that colonoscopies are covered without cost-share in the circumstances as described above.
